Meet Matthew Sifert of Scottsdale, Arizona. Matt joins Federalism In Action as one of our Federalism Fellows for the semester. Currently an undergrad at The King’s College in New York, Matt is pursuing a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics with a minor in Theology. Prior to joining the FIA team, Matt interned for U.S. Representative David Schweikert in Arizona and as a tax and fiscal policy intern for the American Legislative Exchange Council in Arlington, Virginia.

At Federalism In Action, Matt plans to focus on fiscal federalism and state and local government.

Matt in his own words…

Originally born in Arlington, Virginia, my family and I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona when I was very young. Growing up in Scottsdale, I was exposed to an interesting political climate, consisting of a fast growing population of both young families and retired individuals.

I was fascinated to learn how individuals vote according to their interests and how those interests affect public policy at all levels of government. As a fellow with Federalism In Action, I hope to learn more about how government, both on a state and federal level, can best serve the needs of their citizens. I believe that the best way to achieve this is through fully implementing the principles of American federalism at every level of government.

While in college I have participated in the College Republicans, Student Athletes Advisory Committee, and the college’s baseball team. I have interned at Congressman David Schweikert‘s Arizona district office, where I researched legislation, handled casework, and assisted constituents. More recently, I was a tax and fiscal policy intern with the American Legislative Exchange Council. While at there, I researched and wrote about different initiatives that states were proposing that would boost their economic freedom and competitiveness.

Now, as an intern for Federalism In Action, I am hopeful that I can further my knowledge of state and local legislation, while soaking up all the knowledge FIA has to offer.
