Today we gather with friends and loved ones to give our thanks for the many blessings we enjoy. In so doing, let’s remember those giants who throughout our nation’s history made sure the flame of liberty stayed alive – names like Washington, Lincoln, King and Reagan come to mind.
Let’s also remember the many soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who fought and gave their lives in defense of our natural rights. It has been said many times but it remains deeply true: freedom is not free.
Of course, it’s not only statesmen and warriors who must defend our freedom. It is the job of every citizen to zealously guard his natural rights and those of his fellow man, in all spheres of life. As Ronald Reagan implored the nation in 1985:
“My fellow Americans, let us keep this Thanksgiving Day sacred. Let us thank God for the bounty and goodness of our nation. And as a measure of our gratitude, let us rededicate ourselves to the preservation of this: the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
