Before you leave the office today (assuming you’re not snowed-in) check out our latest edition of Top 3 Local. For those of you who are new to our site: every Friday we select three stories featuring “local people, making local decisions.” You might call it “federalism in action.”
Read on for this week’s Top 3 Local stories. And if you have a story we should feature in next week’s post, send the good news to FIA@StateBudgetSolutions.org.
FOR MOTIVATION: King v. Burwell
With the nation’s high court now hearing King v. Burwell, Obamacare is back in the news. If the court sides with the plaintiffs, it could severely weaken or even topple the Orwellian-named Affordable Care Act. As the Heritage Foundation’s Edmund Haislmaier and Andrew Kloster have noted, the court’s ruling might pave the way for a return to state-based regulation of health insurance.
FOR INSPIRATION: WV House Votes to Ax Common Core
Across the country, Common Core remains under constant fire. On Saturday the West Virginia House voted overwhelmingly to withdraw the Mountain State from the uniform K-12 standards to which it had committed only five years ago. The repeal measure now heads to a Senate committee for consideration.
FOR FUN: Festival of Owls
Houston, Minnesota’s annual Festival of Owls begins this afternoon and runs through Sunday. In what must be the world’s largest event devoted to nocturnal birds of prey, scheduled activities include scientific lectures, hooting contests, and live owl exhibitions. If you’d like to meet the World Owl Hall of Fame’s newest inductees, don’t miss Saturday’s awards banquet at the Four Seasons Community Center.
