Another week has passed, which means it’s time for another installment of Federalism in Action’s weekly blog series, Top 3 Local. If you’re new to our site, here’s what it’s all about: every Friday, we spotlight three of the nation’s top stories featuring local people, making local decisions. You might call it “federalism in action.”
Read on for this week’s Top 3 Local stories. And if you have a story we should feature in next week’s post, send the good news to FIA@StateBudgetSolutions.org.
FOR MOTIVATION: States of Dependence
State Budget Solutions’ annual report on federal aid to states, released on Tuesday, finds that states remain highly dependent on Uncle Sam. With the federal government now over $18 trillion in debt, current levels of aid to states may not last.
“Now is the time for states to prepare for likely cuts in federal aid,” says Bob Williams, president of State Budget Solutions. “Idaho and Utah have already crafted plans to operate with less federal money. Statehouses across the country would do well to follow their lead.”
FOR INSPIRATION: Presidential Wisdom
Since Monday was Presidents Day, we’ll share these quotes from past residents of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue:
“The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.” – James Madison
“When a man begins to feel that he is the only one who can lead in this republic, he is guilty of treason to the spirit of our institutions.” – Calvin Coolidge
“All of us need to be reminded that the federal government did not create the states; the states created the federal government.” – Ronald Reagan

FOR FUN: Lunar New Year
Though often called “Chinese New Year,” the turning of the lunar calendar is a national holiday in many Asian countries. Here in the United States, many communities will host parades and festivals to celebrate the Year of the Goat (or Ram, or Sheep – there is some confusion this year). San Francisco, home to America’s most populous Chinatown, has a variety of New Year’s events planned through Sunday, March 8th.
