The testimony from Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska, highlights the problems facing Western states due to the federal ownership of their land. The federal government’s hold on Western lands is paralyzing states from utilizing their natural resources and growing economically. Here, we see a clear example of how the federal-state partnership is completely out of balance.  Sen Murkowski closes with this statement:

“We all know. The federal government is broke. We can’t continue to pay counties not to utilize the land within their boundaries. You need to be able to access the resources that are on your lands.

We either need to utilize our federal lands to generate the revenue and the jobs for our rural communities or we should divest the federal government of those lands and let the states, counties or boroughs manage them.”
